Digital Ethics centre-stage at International Conference

Digital Ethics took centre-stage at the 40th International Conference of Data Protection & Privacy Commissioners in Brussels this week.
In his opening address Giovanni Buttarelli, the European Data Protection Supervisor, described the event as
"a conference about the human values which underpin privacy and data protection".
Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, gave a strongly-worded keynote speech defending the privacy rights of individuals and praising the GDPR,demanding that the US introduces a similarly tough law to give US citizens the same rights; Facebook's VP, Erin Egan, who also addressed the conference, supported that position when asked.
Tim Cook stated:
“Our own information, from the everyday to the deeply personal, is being weaponised against us with military efficiency ...We shouldn't sugar-coat the consequences ... This is surveillance, and these stockpiles of personal data only enrich the companies that collect them.”
